Laserwelding instead of glueingIt regulary occurs that plastic parts have to be fused by means of a glue connection. This glueing is in many cases a very intensive job and the part construction of the glue aereas have offen a costs increasing effect for the injection mould. In the following case description two product parts have to be glued and after that handling be clamped together until the glue has hardened. You can use several tricks for this clamping (see pictures) but what ever you use, it's an intensive work. Of course, you could make an expensive clamping system...
We were able to fuse both parts without a visible weld. This is because the welding line with Mareco's 3D Laser Welding system lies in the connecting arrea between the two parts, so an invisible weld. In fact exactly in the came area as the former glue-line. This was reached by adding additives to the masterbatch of the polymer of one of the two product halves to make that part transparent for the welding laser. The other part was laser absorbent so the melt caused by the heat of the laser took place in the laser absorbent part en was then conducted to the laser transparent part. See also next schematic principle.
The results where perfect and we could achieve a cost reduction of 20%!! Conditions for the feasibility of the system:
In the next two pictures you can see the parts positioned in a welding fix, they are showed without the clamping piece. You will notice that in the right picture one of the two parts is visible transparent, this only showed on the picture to explinate the system.
Look at the most important advantages from 3D laserwelding:
The system has been made possible thanks to the Liof and the European Commission |
